History

King’s College UK, Gurugram, is the newest chapter in a storied tradition of educational excellence that began in 1880 with the founding of King’s College UK, Taunton. Established in collaboration with the prestigious King’s College UK, Taunton, this new campus represents a significant expansion of the college’s rich legacy, following in the footsteps of esteemed institutions around the world such as Doha, Cairo, and Riyadh.

Our newly build Gurugram campus stands as a testament to our enduring commitment to high standards in education. It marks a new era of growth and innovation, embodying the same principles that have guided King’s College UK for over a century. The campus itself stands in harmony with the nature reserve of the Aravali Hills surrounding it, providing a serene and inspiring environment for learning.

King’s College, originally named King Alfred’s School, was the fifth school founded by Nathaniel Woodard, opening in 1880. Woodard dedicated the school to Alfred the Great (871 to 899), the West Country king who laid the foundations of what would become the kingdom of England.

Woodard chose to use Bishop Fox’s badge of the Pelican in its Piety for King’s. This enduring symbol, depicting a parent bird drawing its own blood to feed its young, represents the ultimate act of self-sacrifice and care. It embodies the profound dedication to nurturing and supporting the growth of the young ones, ensuring they thrive even at the cost of personal sacrifice. This powerful imagery underscores our commitment to providing an environment where students are cared for, supported, and encouraged to reach their fullest potential.

The school’s motto, “Fortis et Fidelis” (lat. Brave and Faithful), beautifully complements this symbol. It emphasises our dedication to instilling values of bravery, integrity, and loyalty in our students, teachers, and school community. Just as the Pelican nurtures its young with unwavering commitment, we are devoted to fostering an educational atmosphere where students are not only academically enriched but also morally and emotionally supported. Our aim is to nurture and educate future generations, equipping them with the resilience and fortitude needed to face the challenges of the world with confidence and compassion.

For 140 years, King’s College has evolved to reflect changes in education and society. The site is ever-changing, with new facilities being built nearly annually to ensure that we remain at the forefront of educational excellence and innovation.
